Constant headaches are said to plague millions of Americans, and millions more worldwide. These headaches can be between moderate and severe, and last hours or days. A headache occurs when the muscle around the skull spasms. The throbbing or dull pain you feel is that spasm action going on. Constant headaches are also known as chronic headaches. Migraines are also part of this group and can last for weeks. For a condition to be considered chronic it must occur for over 2 weeks each month for more than a quarter of the year.
There are several different types of constant headaches and migraines. They are usually accompanied by vomiting or nausea, and in some cases, dizziness. Chronic headache problems are often associated with stress or getting too much caffeine. Very rarely is there a serious underlying medical condition that results in these headaches. These include ocular migraines, tension headaches and migraines, and chronic constant pain on one side of the head.
Each type of constant headache has its own causes and conditions that must be met for it to be diagnosed as such. Most of them increase in severity with light and sound, and may include nausea. These headaches can often be caused in adults that are lacking in proper nutrients and consuming too much caffeine. Since caffeine causes your body to lose 100 milligrams of calcium per 12 ounces you drink, you also start to lose the ability to absorb other vitamins. Caffeine headaches are a common culprit amongst young adults in the workplace who feel pressured to keep going and going.
Hemicrania continua is the worst type of chronic headache. These headaches last forever if not treated properly, and offer no relief at all. It hurts on one side of the head indefinitely until the problem is resolved. Headaches can also be linked to gastrointestinal problems, stress, pregnancy, obesity, and high blood pressure. Various types of headaches will have similar symptoms but a doctor can pinpoint the exact cause of the pain and where it’s coming from. In severe cases brain scans may be required to further diagnose or rule out tumors or cancer.
Permanent treatments for constant migraines or headaches include various holistic treatments, surgery in some cases, and pain medication. However, taking pain killers in excess can increase the pain that is caused by headaches and actually make your condition much worse. Not all headaches are equal, so be sure to rule out any potential underlying health conditions, such as a brain tumor or virus infections. Powerful headaches require aggressive treatment when they first start. Waiting too long can make these headaches immune to aggressive treatments, thus making it something you have to live with.
